I think for the sake of differentiation, it is fine.  The poster image in the middle is left alone, but the ancillary elements on the sides are updated.  I like it.

I would have thrown in a few cryptic biscuits into the mix....

Let's Go Crazy? Ok! I will!

Like a starfish on one album.... some coffee on another album... maple syrup on another album... jam on another album, a side order of ham on another album, and of course a tangerine on another album just to drive die hard collectors Crazy!  popcorn

I do feel like the contents are just the low hanging fruit, though.  While "We Can Filafle" and "Wonderful Butt" may have been written in this period, they didn't really gel until Parade sessions or later.  Along with "Our Destiny"/"Roadhouse Garden," I would have rather seen them on a release specific to the Revolution era. The lack of "Wednesday" is disheartening from a clinical perspective as it was at one point the anthem.  I've never heard Love And Sex, so I do not know there.  With the DVD (a DVD!) just being a reissue of the P&R Live home video and the singles disc just being sequenced mostly by chronolgical release... it just seems like a lack of effort on their part.  The August '83 gig would have garnered more interest as proof that they do indeed have things in the vault.  Live should still be released, but separately.

That silver foil is very effective - especially on the LP version!

Looked a bit tacky on pictures, but very good 'in the flesh'

    Overall, I am satisfied

While no disagreement with what should be or not be included, I have to say overall Disc 2 is good value, it reflects a knowledge of what else was widely available to the Purple Underground so it could include some surprises.  Everything else is gravy...for me.

And don't forget - according to the official story, P selected the songs for Disc 2 (as remastering the PR tracks) and handed them into WB for the release.

So I am just happy to enjoy this last meal from him, as from now on, all future Deluxe releases will be assembled by some committee or corporation...

    My 2 cents...er, pence lol!

Purple Rain itself sounds amazing.  There are little touches I never noticed before, and Bobby and Mark's musical contribution's actual have a sonic character and presence.  I especially like that it is actually a new master from the original tape and not a remaster of the original release.  Before I put it in I did check the credits and did wince a bit when I saw the mastering engineer's name (Welton), but he did a great job.  All in all, though, it's not the album I've known and studied for 30+ years so it's going to be an adjustment.

Disc 2 I still feel was unfocused.  The songs sound great, but some feel half-finished.

Disc 3 has the exact flow problem I foresaw in my Listen2Prince blog, the flow is just off because of the sequencing.  But it is nice to have some good audio quality on the b-sides.

I'll be watching the DVD after lunch tomorrow.

I felt the deluxe version should have included the associated Artists too

Me, too.  It feels like they are saving that sort of thing for a true anniversary edition.  Maybe not the 35th, but the 40th is close(ish), and that is typically how WB thinks.  Now dollars AND Future dollars, rather than being complete.

Watching the DVD it feels like a straight up transfer.  From the master reel of the VHS, so it's clean but the audio is a bit thin and the visual looks straight out of the 80's.

It works for this, it just feels like they went out of their way to not come out and say that it was a reissue of that '85 boradcast/home video.

Mine came today, watched the DVD and reboxed it into a better case. The DVD has much better sound than the old tape.
