    --------------------------

So has anyone given this a listen ?

Personally I've been through it a few times. Suspect
It baffles me because I have read some nice reviews on the album and just don't seem to hear what they hear.
In fact it hurts my ears all together, it is filled with noise and very little substance.
It's kind of like a "Black Sweat" EP with sonic distortions everywhere (and not in the Jimi Hendrix good way).
The vocals Prince delivers feel as though they were laid down to a different set of cool tracks that were somehow switched at the last moment, in favor of some cheap 90's Dr.Fink sound FX knock offs.
Reviewers keep saying he's experimenting when they review his albums of late. But, it feels more and more like he is searching for his old successful ways but has no clue where he left the key to the purple music.

If there is such a thing as Musical Alzheimer's then Prince must have it.

    I love Noise  Kool

I detect traces of My Name Is Prince, Loose Melt With U, and those are among my favorites.

I'm impressed by the energy and urgency of it all. Those things were often missing in recent Prince albums.

I really don't understand what people see wrong with it? It's not 'that' kind of Prince album, it's 'this' kind ;)

    Agree with you.
There is something alive in HNR.
Of course, if you are thinking about PR, SOTT or Lovesexy, the album loose in the competition. Nobody can so a classic every day. Not even Prince.

It's not bad.  It's not great.  It's not old P.  My standard mantra/expection for every P album since (pick and insert album/decade of your choice)...that said,an enjoyable listen given the phase he is in now musically (could have been presented as AOA pt 2 but that's just me).

It will get a few more spins before it gets archived...

Completely agree! It's a bit better then the stuff he'd produced lately. But not up to par to the magic he has written in the past. Don't think he will surprise us again in the future.

Not classic P, but I still listen to it

I agree that half of it is terrible, over-produced 'pop/edm', but the other half has been on my iphone since release and I still enjoy them.  These are:  "Shut This Down" (hate the vocals, but when the bass comes in, I can't resist), "This Could Be Us", "Hardrocklover", "1000 Xs and Os" and even "June" are all worth listening to.  I'm an old-school Prince fan (ie:  I'm old;) and did not like this album at first, but after a few listens, these songs grew on me.  I do hope we see another 3EG project, though, but I think he may have moved on to "Mono Neon" (not necessarily a bad thing).

I have enjoyed it more since getting on CD, but it's not one of my favorites yet. Since I've been recovering from my trip to the hospital I've had a chance to listen to a few albums that were on the bottom of my P list in the past. Here are a few that sound fresh to my ears (maybe it's the pain killers talking) 3121, lotus flower disc 1,crystal ball & emancipation even though I had already liked that last one

I love that feeling of revisiting a forgotten Prince album, and realsing it wasn't so bad after all. I've had similar experiences with Planet Earth and Lotusflow3r disc 1. And I didn't even have to change my hip!

Meanwhile I keep plugging Phase 1 as a very enjoyable little trip
