Maceo Musicology Webcast #27 – “Crazy Mama” Lulu Hughes

So who is this “Quebec chic” aka Crazy Mama?

Well, how I discovered her was when I was in Montreal a few years back to visit my then-girlfriend, and we had to go to a music benefit concert for her work. One of the artist on that bill was Lulu Hughes. Of course, all the artists were Québécois (French Canadian) and I didn’t know any of them, let alone understand them. Just before Lulu came on, my then-girlfriend leaned over to me and said “I think you’ll like her.” Naturally my arrogant self expected some Celine Dion type music, but instead I was blown away!

So I tracked down her cd at a used cd store in Montreal. She has a tremendous voice (and she sings in French and English), but it was her music that made me a fan. Then I got her 2nd cd and I fell in love.

Best description of her music I read: “Lulu takes the kind of chances in pop music Prince used to take”

I did receive some help with the pronunciations.

    Enjoy

Blue-eyed soul chanteuse Lulu Hughes was born and raised in Quebec, first earning attention as a member of the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir. In the decade to follow she kicked around the local scene fronting her own blues band, earning frequent comparisons to Janis Joplin, in addition to singing backup for everyone from Too Many Cooks to Barry White.

After two years at the CASINO DE PARIS, Lulu returns home to present her first self-titled solo album in 2002. Her originality, her mix of influences such as funk, soul, rock, blues and swing earned her instant success with the first single ROCK WITH ME (WINNER OF THE SOCAN 2003 SONG OF THE YEAR AWARD). Her dynamic debut leaves no one indifferent and in 2003, she was rewarded with two nominations at the ADISQ GALA (Quebec’s version of the Junos in Canada, and the Grammys in the USA) for BEST FEMALE ARTIST and REVELATION OF THE YEAR.

Crazy Mama, released in 2006, is a powerful blend of rock, soul, funk and swing bringing her once again to a new level (ed note: unfortunately, it was pulled soon after release due to an unreleated scandal with her management).

Lulu, versatile and surprising, released a new album in 2010, with her new band the Montreal All City Big Band, with 20 musiciens and 3 back up singers. The album was launched on June 2 , 2010 at l’Astral in Montreal.

    Great!

    I plug straight into this!

Never judge a book ... but I would never have bought a CD with cover like that! !Laughing

What also emerges from the Lulu-story, is that Maceo has an arrogant self?! That he wouldn't be impressed by Celine Dion? That he listens to Y when he says he wants more? That it's good to listen to your girlfriend when she says 'you're gonna like it' ?

    Thanks!

Just a great podcast so far...

I just adore the interaction with her majesty and you.

Maybe her majesty should do her own.

The opening track as from the 3threat is just amazing, it's Zeppelin mixed with a bond theme. It should be a bond theme really as it just has that something very different from anything else I have ever heard. It's wonderful.

I will have to take a listen again as there was a lot of interference from different angles this evening as there was a Halloween Party on, typical....our house again.....

I ran out of time to read the whole story, skeletons, ghosts and freaks knocked on my door and ended my journey with Lulu.

This is part I of a part II story...I will catch the rest tomorrow. Totally new to me but I have to say 'I am a big fan!'

An amazing artist, thanks for the introduction to the Crazy Mama.

I will follow, she has 1 more fan!

    Xrazy podcast!
Although the music was a bit relentless (I needed a bit of a breather with that one slower song) and although I prefer the usual variation of the magic Maceo hat, I still very much enjoyed this feast of exuberance.
Mix one or two of these songs into any given podcast-pie, and its bound to come all shiny and rich out of the oven. Lovely!

But what I loved best ... was the new DJ team: Mace2theO introducing Mrs. Microphone on microphone (I bet CK doesn't even know what that's supposed to refer to - or does he? Laughing) Great little excerpts of how things are in the Boler Household lol!

So in a moment of boldness, I 'friended' Lulu Hughes on FB and sent her a note on how much a bunch of old P fans enjoyed her music (especially 'H Bomb'!). Even sent her a link to the webcast, and shared some of your collective supportive quotes (CK: "H Bomb should be a Bond theme - it has everything"). Even offered to take it down if it caused any problems.

Lo and behold, she wrote back!! (remember, French is her 1st language)

    • Monday
      Lulu Hughes

      • Hello!

I just read your mail and wanna thank you , really wanna thank you for
putting me on your radio show...! Of course i don't mind you doing so
and am very please to see that some people are enjoying my work over
        there!
Although i've been around the Quebec scene for a little bit
more that 20 years, i,'m still a trudging artist trying very hard to get
a little recognition. The music industry is in a very hard angle as we
know, so it's even harder to find a record label that believe in an
artist enough to be pushing it to success. For many artists, success
        seems to be elusive...
I am one of them, i don't feel shame to admit it! But i still believe
in what i have to do and that is singing, writing, composing music and
being on tour. So i just keep on trying

I now live in Hamburg-Germany, trying to live my child hood dream of
getting big here in Europe...Not an easy thing to achieve! I also have a
little 20 months old little girl named Melody that dances and sings to
her Crazy Mama music...A star in the making!

        I am presently
working on writing a musical, and trying very hard to find the right
people in Germany to get a kick start here...We'll see!!

Once again, thanks a million for everything and if you need any info or else, please don't hesitate!

        Peace
        Lulu Hughes

    What a cool lady

Re her offer for any else, I gonna ask her if she has any bootlegs (ie shows, alternate takes, etc)

So thanks to Entropy for supporting a new artist
